What to Expect in a Brainspotting Session
Brainspotting is an advanced way of processing traumas that have been stored in the brain since childhood. I help clients find the root causes of the buried traumas inside deeper parts of the brain called the mid-brain.
A client rates the topic they want to focus on during session from a scale of 1-10. If you feel that the problem is a 10, it means that the topic is troubling you severely. If you score a low number such as a 1, it means that the problem no longer has power over you and the pain has left your body.
I’ll have you identify where in the therapy room you feel most safe to look at when you want a break from processing the traumas. The beauty of Brainspotting is that you can go at your own pace. You’re brain is the leader and will be healing at it’s own time.
I’ll invite you to listen to bilateral nature sounds to relax your nervous system to stimulate the right and left hemispheres of your brain. Once your body feels relaxed, I will be measuring your body’s reflexes such as blinking patterns, sighing, heavy breathing, smiling, and nervous ticks. Once I sense your body is moving and your eyes are locked on that particular spot, I will leave my pointer there. At this point in the session, you’re welcome to process the things that come up verbally or you don’t have to talk.
I will be checking in from time to time to see if there’s tension in your body and have you tell me where it moves to while your eyes are locked on the spot. At anytime you want me to move to another spot I can most certainly change the positioning. Whatever your mind is thinking about, it’s relevant to the main topic.
At the end of the session, I will continue teaching you ways to self soothe at home. I will have you do a grounding and mindfulness exercise to help you come back to the session. I’ll ask if your number on the scale has changed or stayed the same. You might leave therapy feeling emotionally drained and that’s completely normal. I strongly suggest staying hydrated and getting plenty of needed rest.
During your following session I will check in with you to see what you noticed and experienced during your week and to see if you’re number has lessened. We can continue working on this particular topic until you feel like it no longer affects you.
